☕️ What coffee lovers must know: the golden ratio and extraction secrets of espresso!

You drink coffee every day, but do you really know the science behind it? Today let’s take a deeper look at the golden ratio of espresso and how to adjust the flavor of your coffee based on different extraction parameters!

What is the Golden Ratio for Espresso?
The "golden ratio" is a concept often mentioned by baristas, which refers to the ratio of coffee powder to the extracted espresso liquid. For espresso, the optimal golden ratio is 1:2:

If you use 18g of coffee powder, you should get 36g of espresso.
The recommended extraction time is usually 25-30 seconds. Too short or too long will affect the flavor.
This ratio is believed to bring out the best balanced flavor of coffee beans, achieving a harmonious unity of the three tastes of sour, sweet and bitter.

Why is the Golden Ratio so important?
1️⃣ Balanced taste:
The golden ratio can find the balance between the sourness, sweetness and bitterness of coffee beans. For example, using beans with a strong fruity aroma can show its rich fruit acidity and subtle sweetness at this ratio without being too bitter or monotonous.

2️⃣ Rich taste:
Espresso requires thick oil and rich layers. The golden ratio can just capture the essence of the coffee powder and bring a satisfying drinking experience.

3️⃣ Flexible adjustment:
While 1:2 is the standard, it provides a foundation from which you can make subtle adjustments based on your personal preferences. For example, those who prefer a stronger taste can try 1:1.5, while those who want a lighter taste can try 1:2.5.

How to adjust coffee flavor according to extraction parameters?
🕒 Time Adjustment:
Too acidic? Prolong the extraction time to fully release the sweetness in the coffee powder.
Too hard? Shorten the extraction time to avoid too much bitter substances entering the coffee liquid.
⚖️ Powder quantity control:
Too much powder? This may cause the coffee to be too strong or even impossible to extract smoothly.
Too little powder? The coffee flavor may be too thin and lose the layered texture that espresso should have.
💧 Extraction volume:
Is the ratio too low (e.g. 1:1)? The taste will be strong and bitter.
Is the ratio too high (e.g. 1:3)? The coffee may become thin and lose body.
